Maine Delegation Pushes for Funding for New DDG-51 Destroyer Construction at BIW

The Maine congressional delegation is pushing for the authorization of $100 million in funds for construction of a fifth DDG-51 Arleigh Burke destroyer at Bath Iron Works. The DDG-51 class of ship program was authorized for nine with an option of an additional DDG-51. The funding is for the construction of a 5th destroyer to be built at BIW. Five of the ten are built at a different shipyard in the south. The new ship has a increased stealth capability and advanced anti-missile ship defense systems. Read more about the DDG-51 at a Wikipedia site and learn about the prospects of the approval for funding in "Delegation pushing for $100M to start new destroyer at BIW", Banger Daily News, January 7, 2014.
